Although he resides within the picturesque and beautiful foothills of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales, Joe Farr’s style of techno is anything but beautiful.

His brash, confrontational, and raucous approach towards techno production and DJing has distinguished him as an unstoppable tour-de-force within the worldwide techno scene.

Over the past 5 years he has churned out countless top-notch releases on a variety of renowned labels such as Turbo, Bloc, User Experience, and the Belfast-based record label ‘DSNT’ – of which Resident Advisor quotes as being “Comically Hard” – setting the stage for the sort of explosive sounds that have become a staple of Joe Farr’s work.

His first forays into music began at the young age of 14 when he started learning and playing guitar, but it didn’t take long for him to realise that the instrument was not for him – so he put down his guitar and has never played it since.

Fortunately enough however, around the same time Joe’s music teacher revealed to him another separate and evermore enticing room: a music studio full of electronic equipment that was directly adjacent.

Containing a wide variety of samplers, synthesizers, strange new machines and other wondrous electronic bits and pieces, Joe was immersed in a new world like nothing he had experienced before.

Joe made his techno debut in 2011 after being signed onto the Canadian record label ‘Turbo’. Since then, he has dropped numerous tracks and EP’s on a healthy range of imprints and labels, including the likes of: Leyla Records, ONNSET, Leisure System, and RAAR as well as releases on his own record label: User Experience (UX).

User Experience (UX) is Joe’s personal platform for both his own musical exploration and experimentation, but also (soon) to be a stable for welcoming up-and-coming artists that he sees immense promise in. UX is designed to be an imprint that’s full of powerful, exhilarating and raw to the bone techno music that’s uncompromising in its sounds and output.

Not only does Joe have a rich and colourful musical discography, containing releases like his Clock EP, Ascend EP, UX001, Sense of Purpose, On Further Inspection, and Position EP – but he has also chalked up a good number of remixes, reworking tracks from producers Ansome, Tiga, Neil Landstrumm, and Rebekah.

Past collaborations have seen him work alongside prominent artist, Martyn Hare, as well as his own original compositions being reworked and remixed by some established heavyweight techno artists, notably: Max Cooper, Truss, and Tessela – with more set to come in the future.

Among other forthcoming releases, Joe is showcasing a new, less harsh and more melodic side to his sound through established label A R T S. ‘Dedicate’, the upcoming solo EP is due for release in October 2018 and features 3 original productions and a killer remix from A R T S founder Emmanuel.

Look out for more from Joe over the coming months, but for now enjoy an hour of driven stylised Techno in the latest instalment of ABYSS Presents.
